Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a full-bodied red wine that goes well with grilled meat. It is primarily grown in California, although a few producers in Oregon, Mexico, and regions of South America also produce Zinfandel. Depending on the style of the vintner, the grape can also be made into sweet, Port-like dessert wines and complex sparkling wines.

History

Previously thought of as an American grape varietal, Zinfandel is now known, through DNA fingerprinting to be genetically equivalent to the Italian Primitivo and the varietal from Croatia from which they both descend, Crijenak Kasteljanski.
