Yuniesky Betancourt is a Major League Baseball (MLB) player with the Seattle Mariners. He is widely regarded as an excellent defensive shortstop, as well as a consistent hitter for average.
Early Life
Yuniesky Betancourt was born in Santa Clara, Cuba on January 31, 1982. He would develop his baseball skills in the Cuban Baseball leagues where he was recognized for his speed and hitting. In 2003, he would defect from Cuba by a raft. He would play in Mexico before being picked up by the Seattle Mariners.
Pro Career
Betancourt would make his Major League Baseball debut on July 28, 2005 for the Seattle Mariners. In 2006, he was named the starting shortstop for the team.He would develop into an outstanding defender for the Mariners and a consistent hitter for average with a batting average of .289 in 2006 and 2007.
