  • Career to Date

A native of Cuba, Escobar defected in order to participate in the 2005 amateur draft and was chosen by the Braves in the second round. He made his big league debut in June of 2007, and immediately began competing with starting shortstop Edgar Renteria for the job. Escobar made an excellent case for the starter's role, hitting .326 in 94 games while playing second base, shortstop, and third. He also showed power by clubbing five home runs. At the end of the season, the Braves traded Renteria to the Detroit Tigers and Escobar had an everyday role in the infield. In 2008, Escobar got off to a strong start.
