The Myrica Rubra tree at full maturity is anywhere between 10 and 20 metres in size. The tree will grow in relatively poor conditions including acidic soils, which has made the tree an ideal crop in area of China. The fruits are typically between 1.5 - 2.5 centimetres in diameter. Certain commercially produced varieties are up to 4 centimetres in size.

It is an important economic crop in the south of China and in particular is grown in the following provinces - Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan and Zhejiang.
