Yoga

Welcome to Mahalo Yoga!

Yoga can be a great way to stretch and strengthen your muscles while also practicing meditation and relaxation techniques. Though the original concept of yoga included physical, mental and spiritual disciplines, the more modern, Westernized version focuses mainly on the physical aspect of moving through various yoga poses.

If you've ever found yourself asking "What exactly IS yoga?" then watch the video below as Mahalo's yoga expert Kimberly Fowler gives you a brief overview. Then you can scroll down and read on for more information.

Mahalo's Yoga Playlists

Even though yoga poses and their variations are nearly limitless, Mahalo has a few basic ones to get you started. Once you've mastered these, let us know what other poses you'd like to learn or areas of yoga you'd like to focus on by emailing us at requests@mahalo.com.

What You'll Need

Though it's possible to do yoga without any props or equipment, some people, especially beginners, choose to practice yoga with the aid of a few tools specifically designed for yoga. These can include:

  • Yoga mat: These are usually rubber and measure 24 inches by 68 inches. They are meant to help with stability and provide cushioning as you move through different yoga poses.
  • Blocks: If you're having a difficult time doing the pose correctly due to limitations of flexibility, blocks can be placed on the floor so you can support your body weight on them.
  • Blanket: During you relaxation session, you may want to cover up with a blanket or towel.
  • Straps or belts: Like blocks, straps can help if you're not as flexible as you'd like to be.

Disclaimer

There is no "one size fits all" approach to yoga. Please be aware that not all poses are for everyone and this or any other exercise program may result in injury. To reduce your risk of injury, consult your doctor about any pre-existing joint or muscle injuries before beginning a yoga regimen.

If you feel any pain or strain while practicing any of these poses, stop and see a doctor. Pregnant and menstruating women should be extra-conscious about the poses they choose to practice. Mahalo's experts offer advice that is in no way intended as a substitute for medical counseling.
