Yellowstone Earthquakes

  • Scientists are analyzing the seismic activity in Yellowstone National Park. Beginning on December 26, 2008, as many as 250 earthquakes were detected in a three day time frame.U.S. News & World Report: Yellowstone Earthquakes Under Supervolcano Caldera (December 30, 2008) The park, home to the magnificent geyser Old Faithful and numerous hot springs, sits atop a "caldera" (basin) formed by a catastrophic volcanic eruption millions of years ago. Flowing lava and magmatic heat powers the geysers and other geothermal activity.U.S. Geological Survey: Yellowstone Caldera, Wyoming
  • December Yellowstone Earthquakes

By Monday, December 29, 2008, Yellowstone experienced three days worth of earthquakes. The 250 earthquakes in Yellowstone ranged from being barely detectable to a 3.9 magnitude that rattled the park on Saturday, December 27, 2008. Utah geophysics professor Robert Smith says the activity is "certainly not normal," and says the quakes are significant because it maybe related to hypothermal activity. The park is a geologically active site and the December 2008 earthquakes mark the most intense activity the area as seen in years.U.S. News & World Report: Yellowstone Earthquakes Under Supervolcano Caldera (December 30, 2008)
