Yellow River or Huang He is the second longest river in China. It is also sometimes referred to as the "Mother River of China." This river is very prone to flooding. It has flooded 1,593 times in last 3,000 years and changed its main course 18 times. The devastation from these floods has also earned this river another nickname: "China's Sorrow."

Brief Overview
According to tradition, the Chinese civilization has its roots in the Yellow River basin. The river is believed to be both blessed and cursed because its periodic floods have been known to cause massive devastation and death. The 1887 flood killed somewhere between 900,000 and 2,000,000 people and the 1931 flood killed between one and four million people.
