  • Xiu Xiu is a California based experimental indie band fronted by singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart. The band is known for it's unique style of music—filled with romantic melodrama and meditations on child abuse and disease—as well as Stewart's trembling vocals. The band blends post-punk and electronic experimentation with elements of classical and folk music. The most notable aspect of Xiu Xiu's sound, however, may be the fact that its wildly experimental, often abrasive music is pervaded by beautiful pop melody.
  • History

Since Xiu Xiu's formation in 2000, Stewart has been more or less a one man band with a rotating cast of collaborators, the most consistent of whom has been his cousin, Caralee McElroy. The band's releases have included 2003's A Promise, which dwelt on the suicide of Stewart's father, and 2004's Fabulous Muscles, which increased Xiu Xiu's notoriety and boosted the size of its cult audience. The band's sixth studio album, 2008's Women As Lovers includes a cover the Queen song "Under Pressure."
