  • How Achievements Work

Achievements are in-game objectives that are added to games by the developer. Achievements cover a gamit of goals, such as "Kill 30 thugs with the pistol" or "Complete the sewer level." Each achievement has an assigned point value and, once earned, those points are added to the player's Gamerscore, which is tied to the Gamertag. The Gamerscore is kind of like a badge of honor. It is viewable by other players on Xbox Live and shows how much a person plays games and what they have accomplished in each game.

Note that Gamerscore Points are different from Microsoft Points, which are used to purchase items like downloadable content, themes or gamerpics from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

  • Microsoft's Achievements Policy

Microsoft requires that all games released for the Xbox 360 offer achievements worth a total of 1,000 Gamerscore Points. Developers can later add more achievements worth a maximum of 750 points through downloadable content. In total, a game cannot have more than 80 achievements.

Developers can only add a maximum of 250 new points and 10 achievements each quarter. This number is cumulative, meaning if no new content is added for three quarters, the developer can add the full 750 additional points in one huge pack.

Some games, such as The Orange Box released by Valve in 2007, have more than the maximum number of achievements. This is either because the game was released before the regulation was in place or because, as in the case of The Orange Box, the title is actually comprised of multiple games in one box.Xbox360Achievements.org: The Current Achievement Rules Explained (April 25, 2009)
