The term "WWE Divas" refers to the female talent in World Wrestling Entertainment, which include wrestlers, valets, interviewers and ring announcers.
Though women have been a part of the WWE for decades (usually as valets), Tammy "Sunny" Sytch's arrival in 1995 marked the start of the WWE's focus on their sexuality. Sytch would become one of the most downloaded people on the Internet in the mid-1990s, and that success would continue with future WWE female personalities.http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBiosS/sytch-can.html
When the WWE gained more popularity in the late '90s, they hired more women--now called "divas"--like Lita, Stacy Keibler and Trish Stratus, who is considered by many fans to be one of the best female wrestlers of her time.
Divas in Playboy
Since 1999, nine WWE Divas have posed for Playboy. The trend began with Rena "Sable" Mero posing for the magazine. The trend continued in the year 2000 when Joanie "Chyna" Laurer posed. Then came a two year hiatus in the partnership between the two entities.
From 2003 to 2008, a diva graced the cover of Playboy. First it was Torrie Wilson, then a double cover of Wilson and Mero in 2004 followed. 2005 brought fiery redhead Christy Hemme to the fame of being a cover girl. 2006 was Candice Michelle, followed by Ashley Massaro in 2007 and the recently released Maria Kanellis in 2008. At this point, WWE severed their ties with Playboy as they revamped their structure to meet standards for TV-PG.
Diva Tiffany appeared in the magazine in 2010, but it was revealed that the pictures were taken before she was a part of the WWE.http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/wrestling/2856434/WWE-Diva-Tiffany-aka-Taryn-Terrell-poses-for-Playboy-pictures.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Other divas such as Trish Stratus, Lita and Stacy Keibler also turned down offers to appear in the magazine. Stratus was quoted as saying that she wanted to be known as "multiple time Women's Champion Trish Stratus" rather than "the girl who posed in Playboy." Stratus also stated that she refused the shoot because she can still be sexy without taking her clothes off. Lita has said that she didn't pose because she felt it was wrong for her (who was known as a role model for young girls at the time) to pose for the magazine. Stacy Keibler refused to pose as she believes it would be better if she "left something for the imagination."http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2003/11/30/273168.html
