Wrestlers Herpes Lawsuit

Categories: News | Sports | Wrestling
  • Student Andrew Bradley and two other students sued Pennsylvania's York College after contracting the herpes simplex 1 virus after wrestling an infected teammate, a condition commonly known as "herpes gladiatorum." Though the infected student had covered his infected lesions with tape, the students claim they contracted the virus from the contaminated wresting mat. The three students believe that the school's coaches and trainers actions are responsible for their contraction of the virus.
  • NCAA Herpes Rule

While wrestlers with the herpes virus are not banned from competing or practicing, NCAA regulations state that infected wrestlers must be free of "systemic symptoms such as fever and malaise" before competing, whether or not the infected wrestler has visible lesions. Additionally, infected wrestlers can't develop new lesions for at least 72 hours previous to a meet and must take antiviral medication for at least five days before practicing.ABC News: Wrestlers File Herpes Lawsuit (November 25, 2008)
