  • Icecrown Citadel Lore

The Icecrown Citadel is located on top of the Icecrown Glacier in Northrend, the new continent in Wrath of the Lich King. It is home to the Lich King, Arthas Menethil, and hundreds of thousands of his undead minions, the Scourge.

The Citadel was created when the original Lich King, an Orc shaman named Ner'zhul, was banished back to Azeroth by the demon lord, Kil'jaeden. Kil'jaeden hurled Ner'zhul's prison back into Azeroth, where it collided with Icecrown Glacier, creating a massive rift valley.

Arthas Menethil, the prince of the humans, sought out Ner'zhul's spirit, which was incarcerated in the Frozen Throne at the heart of the Citadel. Uniting his body with Ner'zhul's spirit, Arthas became the Lich King. The force of the union created a massive explosion that shattered most of the ice around the Frozen Throne, creating the massive spire that at stands at the bottom of Icecrown Citadel.
