The World Series of Poker began in 1970. Player Benny Binion is credited with the championship format which is used today. Tom Moore and Vic Vickrey were the first to organize a tournament of poker champions which would be the inspiration for the World Series of Poker. The event was called the Texas Gamblers reunion.
In 2005, the tournament was sponsored by Harrah's Entertainment. It has been sponsored by the company ever since. The tournament had it's most entrants in 2006, with 8,773 players. The all-time high in participants also resulted in the highest payday in the Main Event top prize, which was $12 million. Entrance to the World Series of Poker
There are two different processes used to enter the 2010 World Series of Poker. The first method for entering the poker championship is to compete in online tournaments. There are a variety of these which place winners into the World Series. This method is a guarantee to participate as the fee is quite costly. The entrance fee is $10,000 for players to become part of the main event.
