The World Series is an annual event in Major League Baseball at the end of the season between the winners of the National League and the American League. The series is best out of seven in which the winning league of the season's All-Star Game has home field advantage. The winning team gets the Commissioner's Trophy and each member of the winning team receives a ring presented early the following season.

Parade
On November 6, 2009, Yankees fans celebrated the team's 27th World Series championship with a parade through Lower Manhattan. Many fans waited several hours, arriving as early as 2 a.m, to see their favorite players. The parade concluded at City Hall. Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave the team the keys to the city and rapper Jay-Z sang his Empire State of Mind. Game Summaries
Game 1
Cliff Lee took the mound for the Phillies against CC Sabathia for the Yankees. The Phillies scored first in the top of the third inning when Chase Utley hit a solo home run to right field. That was the only run scored through the first five innings. In the sixth, Utley homered again to right center field to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Sabathia pitched six innings before being relieved by Phil Hughes in the seventh. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino walked. Damaso Marte relieved Hughes and retired Utley and Ryan Howard. David Robertson came in to pitch to Jayson Werth, who walked to load the bases. Raul Ibanez followed with a single to score two runs to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. The Phillies scored two more runs in the ninth inning on a single by Victorino and a double by Howard. Cliff Lee took a shutout into the ninth inning. The Yankees scored one in the ninth. Game 2
AJ Burnett started the game for the Yankees against 37 year old Pedro Martinez for the Phillies. The game was scoreless through the first inning. In the top of the second, Matt Stairs hit a two out single to left field to score Raul Ibanez to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Mark Teixeira home run to right centerfield. The game remained tied into the bottom of the sixth. Hideki Matsui broke the tie with a solo home run to right field. Chan Ho Park relieved Pedro Martinez after the Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jorge Posada singled off of Park to score Brett Garder to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Mariano Rivera entered the game in the eighth inning and pitched the final two innings for the save. Game 3
The series moved to Philadelphia for game 3. Cole Hamels pitched for the Phillies against veteran Andy Pettitte for the Yankees. The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the second inning when Jayson Werth hit a solo home run to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Pedro Feliz doubled, Carlos Ruiz walked and Hamels reached first on a error to load the bases. Jimmy Rollins walked to score Feliz. Shane Victorino followed Rollins with a sacrifice fly to score Ruiz. After two innings, the Phillies lead 3-0. Cole Hamels was shutting out the Yankees until the fourth inning, when Mark Teixeira walked and Alex Rodriguez hit a two run home run to right field. Hamels got into more trouble in the fifth when Andy Pettitte singled to score Nick Swisher to tie the game 3-3. After Derek Jeter singled, Johnny Damon doubled to score two runs. J.A. Happ came in to pitch and held the Yankees scoreless unti Nick Swisher hit a solo home run in the sixth to give the Yankees a 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jayson Werth hit his second home run of the game to cut the Yankees lead to 6-4. The Yankees built the lead back to three after scoring in the seventh off of Chad Durbin. Hideki Matsui hit a home run in the eighth off of Brett Myers to give the Yankees a 8-4 lead. Game 4
The Yankees got off to a quick start against Phillies starter Joe Blanton. Mark Teixeira and Johnny Damon had runs batted in to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Phillies cut the lead to 2-1 off of CC Sabathia after back to back doubles by Shane Victorino and Chase Utley. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Pedro Felix singled to left field to score Ryan Howard. With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth, Nick Swisher scored from second on a single by Derek Jeter to left field. The Yankees increased the lead to 4-2 when Johnny Damon singled to score Melky Cabrera. The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Chase Utely hit a solo home run to right field. That was his third home run in the series against Sabathia. In the bottom of the eighth, Pedro Feliz tied the game with a solo home run to left field off of Jaba Chamberlain. Brad Lidge came in for the Phillies to pitch the ninth inning. With two outs and the score still tied, the Yankees got hits from Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada to give the Yankees a 7-4 lead. Mariano Rivera a scoreless bottom of the ninth to get his second save of the series.
Game 5
The Phillies sent Cliff Lee to the mound to try and stay alive in the series. The Yankees countered with AJ Burnett. The Yankees took an early lead when Alex Rodriguez hit a first inning double to score Johnny Damon. The Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first on Chase Utley's three run home run. It was his fourth home run of the series. The Phillies added two more runs off of Burnett in the bottom of the third and one more off of David Robertson to take a 6-1 lead. The score remained 6-1 until Eric Hinske score on a ground out by Johnny Damon in the fifth inning. With the Phillies leading 6-2 in the seventh, Chase Utley homered to right field, tying Reggie Jackson for the most home runs in a World Series with five. The Phillies added another run when Raul Ibanez homered to left off of Phi Coke. The Yankees cut the lead to 8-4 in the eighth. Chan Ho Park then came in to pitch for Cliff Lee. When Alex Rodriguez scored on a Robinson Cano sacrifice fly, the lead was cut to 8-5. Ryan Madson gave up a run to the Yankees in the ninth inning, but saved the game for Cliff Lee.
