World Series 2009

  • The World Series is an annual event in Major League Baseball at the end of the season between the winners of the National League and the American League. The series is best out of seven in which the winning league of the season's All-Star Game has home field advantage. The winning team gets the Commissioner's Trophy and each member of the winning team receives a ring presented early the following season.

    The first World Series took place in 1903 between the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Red Sox won the series five games to three.     The New York Yankees win the World Series, their 27th in franchise history. Chase Utley hit five home runs in the Series, tying Reggie Jackson for the most home runs in a single World Series. Hideki Matsui was named Most Valuable Player of the Series after having six runs batted in during the final game.
