  • The Lich King

The soul of an orc shaman named Ner'zhul had been trapped within a magical frozen throne by Kil'jaeden the Deceiver. Ner'zhul eventually transformed into the Lich King, a creature of great power, who unleashed the undead Scourge upon the continent of Azeroth, spreading the Plague of Undeath until it reached the land of Lordaeron.

Prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron became corrupted by his hatred of the invaders, as he resorted to increasingly questionable measures to drive the undead out of his homeland. His weakness made him susceptible to the siren call of the Lich King. Arthas was transformed into the first Death Knight, whereupon he assassinated King Terenas, his father. He then traveled to the Frozen Throne and used the cursed blade Frostmourne to shatter Ner'zhul's prison. Their two souls merged into one, giving rise to a new Lich King of formidable power.Official Site: Rise of the Lich King WoW Insider: Know Your Lore: Arthas (February 23, 2007)
