World Chess Championship

- Both men and women are eligible to compete for the overall title, but computers are not eligible
- The first match took place in 1886 and early matches were organized by the reigning champion
- Since 1946, the World Championship has been organized by FIDE, the World Chess Federation
- Current World Champion: Viswanathan Anand
- Separate competitions are held for women, juniors, seniors and computers
- Current Women's World Champion: Alexandra Kosteniuk

The most recent World Chess Championship took place October - November 2008, between the reigning world champion, Viswanathan Anand, and the previous world champion, Vladimir Kramnik.
