Worcester Polytechnic Institute is a private teaching and research university located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Often referred to as simply WPI, its athletic teams are members of NEWMAC Conference.

University History
Worcester Polytechnic Institute was originally founded in 1865 by John Boynton and Ichabod Washburn. The university conducted its first classes in 1868 and operated as an all-male school for the next 100 years. It was shortly after women were allowed into the school, in 1968, that the school began offering a project based curriculum. -
