Wolves

Wolves are large carnivorous mammals that belong to the Candiae family and are very closely related to domestic dogs. Native to North America, northern Europe and Asia, certain wolf species are listed as endangered. Although they will occasionally attack livestock, wolves generally avoid humans. Human encroachment upon their natural habitat and intentional extermination caused wolf numbers to decline sharply in the twentieth century, although recent conservation efforts have shown promising results.

In February of 2009, National Geographic reported that the wolf population was on the rise in northern Spain, prompting the use of Mastiff's to protect cattle.National Geographic: Video: Mastiffs Enlisted to Save Cows (February 21, 2009)

Strength in Numbers

Wolves live in complex social groups known as packs, which consist of eight to thirty members. At the head of the pack are the dominant, or alpha male and female. Only the alphas will produce pups, but all members of the pack will assist in raising the pups. The alpha wolves organize the other members and lead the hunts, which can result in a wolf packs bringing down large animals such as elk and moose.

Wolves communicate with each other through a variety of body positions, expressions and vocalizations. Wolves are distinguishable by their loud, mournful howls, which allow them to communicate over long distances.
