Following the conclusion of the WNBA season, eight teams take place in a bracket-style playoff to determine the league champion. The top two teams after the first two rounds meet in the WNBA Finals, in which the winner is crowned the WNBA champion.

2008 WNBA Playoffs
The 2008 WNBA Playoffs began on September 18, 2008. In the Eastern Conference, the top seeded Detroit Shock defeated the Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty to reach the finals for the third consecutive year. The San Antonio Silver Stars, who topped the Western Conference seedings, defeated the Sacramento Monarchs and the Los Angeles Sparks to face Detroit in the finals.
