Although the film was released nearly seventy years ago, The Wizard of Oz themed costumes, are still incredibly popular for both kids and adults when they want to dress up for Halloween. The tin man, Dorothy, the cowardly lion and the scarecrow each make great stand alone costumes, but are also a common theme for group costumes.
Wizard of Oz Costume Tips
To create a Dorothy costume, wear a blue gingham dress, white short, red sparkly shoes and blue hair ribbons. Accessories can include a small basket with a real or stuffed little black dog, Toto. To make the scarecrow costume, a brown or yellow shirt, perhaps flannel, can be worn with pants and a hat. Stuff straw into the hat and clothing and use red face paint to cover the nose. For the cowardly lion, a brown jumpsuit, fitted with a tail and fur, or a lion mask can be worn. Makeup or face paint can be added in place of a mask to draw the details of the lion's facial features, like whiskers. For the tin man, a silver outfit is needed, complete with silver face paint, an axe and an inverted funnel for a hat.
To become one of the witches from the film, there are two choices, the good witch and the bad witch. Glinda the good witch wears a light pink dress, along with a magic wand and a crown. The wicked witch wears a black and green dress and hat. Green face paint is needed for the face and hands, with a large fake nose optional. The wicked witch also carries a broomstick, which doubles as her transportation.
