Wings

Wings are appendages used by birds, insects, animals, and even machines to facilitate flying. A wing's flat surface uses the properties of aerodynamics to create the proper level of lift and drag, allowing creatures to fly, or in some cases, glide. In birds, wing size and span directly correlates to the type of flying a bird does. Birds such as eagles that mostly glide have large, broad wings. Swooping and diving birds, on the other hand, which include Seagulls, have long, but narrow wings that allow them to maneuver more easily in a darting motion. Like diving birds, hovering rapid birds, like hummingbirds also have long, narrow wings that allow for quick movements. On some birds, of course, the wings are not used for flying. Penguins, for example, use their wings more like flippers to help with swimming. And Ostrich wings are used to aid in balance, not flight.http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/wings.aspx

Wings are not limited to the world of biology though, as references to wings can also be found in mythology, relating to Icarus among other characters, and in the world of fantasy, relating to faeries, dragons, and other such fantastical creatures and beasts. The word can also have many more interpretations not even relating to the world of flight or aerodynamics. Some of these are listed below:

'Red Wings' - "Wings" can be used as a nickname for the Detroit Red Wings NHL hockey team. The Wings are based out of Detroit, Michigan, USA, and play in Joe Louis Arena.
