Wing Bowl

  • One of the largest eating contests in the United States is the Wing Bowl. It has been held annually in Philadelphia since 1993 and is hosted by WIP-AM radio personalities Al Morganti and Angelo Cataldi.
  • Are you ready for some wing eating?

Morganti created the wing in 1993 as an event to be held in his hometown of Philadelphia during Super Bowl week. He rationalized a need to distract football fans in the area because the Philadelphia Eagles hadn't reached the Super Bowl for a while. He also did so as a smack of disrespect at the absurdity of the 4 consecutive Super Bowl losses by the Buffalo Bills, who play in the town where the Buffalo Wings originated. The first contest was held at the Wyndham hotel, and the initial winner was Carmen Cordero who ate 100 wings and won a Hibachi. It's popularity has grown to the point where the most recent editions of the competition are held at Wachovia Center, drawing over 20,000 fans for the event. Bill "El Wingador" Simmons, no relation to ESPN internet columnist Bill Simmons, has won the event five times in his career, while Joey Chestnut is the reigning three-time champion. In 2008, he set a record by eating 241 wings. Coverage of the annual event can be heard live on WIP and seen on local area television station WPSG-TV on tape-delay.
