Windows Live Messenger

  • Windows Live Messenger is a free Instant Messaging client developed by Microsoft. It was formerly called MSN Messenger and is the main piece of software in the Windows Live series of software programs.
  • History

    The first version of Windows Live Messenger was released in 2005, but is was originally the successor of MSN Messenger, which was also discontinued in this same year. After over two years of beta testing, Microsoft finally released Windows Live Messenger on November 6, 2007 as version 8.5.
  • Features

    Windows Live Messenger features many features that rival IM clients have. It has the capability to due voice and video conversations and also the ability to send and receive files from any contacts. Windows Live Messenger also allows users to connect with [[Yahoo! Messenger]]. Other notable features include offline instant messaging, which allows you to leave a message for someone, much like voicemail and the ability to play games with your contacts and chat at the simultaneously.
  • Malicious Use

    Like all instant messaging contacts, Windows Live Messenger is frequently used for malicious malware purposes. The Storm Worm for example, distributes through the Windows Live Messenger contact list and sends fake messages to all of the person's contact lists. In response to this growing threat, Microsoft has made it possible for users to scan the files through IM and that they receive from file transfers.
