Actor William Shatner appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on July 27, 2009, to read the farewell speech given by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a poem.
O'Brien explained that many people who listened to Palin giving the speech were confused, as it was meant to be a poem. He then invited Shatner onstage to read the speech in poetic form.
The bit became a running joke on The Tonight Show, and Shatner would periodically show up to read selections of Palin's writing, such as her tweets and bits taken from her autobiography, Going Rogue.
