Actor William Shatner appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on July 27, 2009, to read the farewell speech given by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as a poem.
O'Brien explained that many people who listened to Palin giving the speech were confused, as it was meant to be a poem. He then invited Shatner onstage to read the speech in poetic form.

Not so sure about that. Yes, I think *some* are afraid. But others aren't really listening, but are parroting what they've heard. Many of the critics *I* hear talk about her are (a la my comments above) quite ill-informed, yet have gotten it into their heads that SHE is ignorant and that they know much more. (This was certainly helped by campaign stumbles last fall -- AND my those in the media who did a shoddy, partisanly selective job of reporting.)

There's nothing incomprehensible about a speech delivered to Alaskans by an Alaskan who makes references which Alaskans would understand. It's clear to anyone being fair that she's trying to remind her constituents how she feels about Alaska, despite stepping down. And as she made clear in her July 4th press conference, it was because she doesn't want to waste their time and tax dollars that she chose to step down, knowing she wouldn't run again. She's made sense since she scared the hell out of the Media and the Obama camp by energizing the Republican base. All of this nonsense from Conan, Letterman, and the Media is intended to drive a nail in a coffin of their making -- though it sadly exists only in their soldout noggins.

Yes, I'm scared of Sarah Palin in the same way I'm scared of letting my 6 year old drive my Kia. She looks adorable behind the wheel but her feet just don't reach the pedals.

A great disservice Ms. Palin did to her people was to invoke the armed-services card, and the press-lies card at her resignation press conference. This is especially so if she opts to take on Rush ``I Hope This Administration Fails'' Limbaugh. The reason this is a disservice is because it commercializes the serious subject of armed services and misinforms about a professional called journalism. I love the take Conan and Mr. Shatner deliver here, but those are two impressions from the entire speech. I'd like to see Shatner do the entire speech. He paid the high price for that skill before it became hep. Mahalo to angieh for a well-designed page.

Well, nice to see he could read (sort of ... a couple of stumbles) FOUR-and a-half sentences out of 20 minutes.. though she delivered them much better and, if you know just three Alaskan terms, they make perfectly good sense (she was addressing Alaskans first of all, in case you missed it).

Actually, I think it's a real hoot that Conan speaks MOCKINGLY of people having trouble understand it, when just knowing THREE terms in two sentences makes perfect sense of it (try a dictionary, Mr O'Brien).

Key line:
"the cold though, doesn't it split the Cheechakos* from the Sourdoughs**?"
* newcomers; **early settlers, long-timers

Even better, those two sentences, once understood, are poking a little fun at the outsiders who are not yet acclimated.. or perhaps at HER outside critics, who "just don't get it", and don't even KNOW that they don't get it. What a great bit of irony - hoist by their own petard, but again, they don't even know it, and think that SHE & her supporters are the ignorant ones!

Fortunately for the rest of us, the Republican base she has energized is so extremely right wing (and amazingly understands and agrees with everything she says!) that even mainstream and intellectual Republicans (no, that's not an oxymoron) have distanced themselves in droves. The only people she is scaring are Teachers who must explain to 5th graders why a vice presidential candidate acts like a 2nd grader.

Yeah, the corporate-owned media sure does give Republicans a hard time - NOT! Even Republican strategists called her ignorance of foreign policy issues "breathtaking." It ain't the media making stuff up... she's earned every word of it.
