William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States. McKinley also held the office of Governor of Ohio from 1892-1896 before running for the Presidency in 1896. He was assassinated in Buffalo, New York soon after beginning his second term.
Foreign Policy
Declaring neutral intervention in April 1898 with regard to Spanish imposition in Cuba, the U.S. Congress essentially declared war for the independence of Cuba. Named the 100-day war, the United States destroyed Spanish navel fleets outside Santiago harbor, strategically seized Manila and occupied Puerto Rico. Upon the conclusion of the conflict, McKinley decided annex the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico to avoid growing imperialist sentiment towards the U.S. abroad.
