William Gladstone, who served for 14 years over four terms as British Prime Minister between 1868 and 1894, was born in Liverpool, England to Sir John Gladstone and Anne Mackenzie Robertson. He was constantly at odds with Queen Victoria, who preferred his rival Benjamin Disraeli. Gladstone was a champion of Irish Home Rule and the elimination of the income tax.
Policies and Politics
During his terms as prime minister, William Gladstone sought to reduce government intervention in the personal finances of citizens. He was also an advocate of lowering of taxes to enhance foreign trade.
