Wil Nieves is a Major League Baseball player. He is currently a catcher for the Washington Nationals.
Early Life
Wilbert Nieves was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on September 25, 1977. In 1995, he was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 47th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Pro Career
On July 21, 2002, Nieves made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres. In his first season, he appeared in 28 games and recorded a .181 batting average. In 2002, he was claimed by the Anaheim Angels. During his time in the franchise, he was unable to make the team at the Major League level. In 2005, he was traded to the New York Yankees for Bret Prinz. He spent several seasons with the Yankees as a back-up catcher, never appearing in more than 26 games for the team during the season. In 2008, he signed with the Washington Nationals as a free agent.
