Wigs are an artificial head covering worn for fashion, cultural and other aesthetic or social purposes. They are often used to cover baldness of either a temporary or permanent nature as well as to emulate the styles of persons of a high social status. Many different materials are used in the manufacture of wigs, including horse-hair, human hair, wool, feathers, buffalo hair, or synthetic fiber. They are made specifically to resemble natural hair or can be made in a bright color to conform to a particular fashion or costume requirement. Clowns are commonly known for wearing bright-colored wigs in hairstyles designed to produce laughter in their intended audience.
History of Wigs
The earliest know use of wigs was in Egypt where such accoutrements were used as a cooler alternative to real hair. In the heat of the northern African continent natural hair could not only be stifling hot but it could attract and retain lice and other annoying vermin. The simplest solution was to shave ones head but hair was considered to be attractive so head coverings made of different materials as a means of replacing ones natural feature with something easier to maintain were devised. The type of material used in a hairpiece was largely dictated by ones social and financial status. The poorer people had to settle for less expensive substitutes such as feathers or animal hair but the ones at the top of the social ladder were able to acquire coiffures made from human hair and as such more like their own. www.randomhistory.com/2009/02/24_wigs.html
On through the years wigs continued to be used but for a time as hats and other such head coverings were required by society they lessened in importance. Then a resurgence began as nobles again began to use fewer hats and had a desire to compensate for a loss of hair and others desired to emulate those of a higher social status. In Europe it became the fashion to powder wigs and even to sculpt the wigs into an elaborate form including other decorations within the wig even including some masterpieces that had a gilded bird cage with living bird inside. www.e-wigs.com/history-of-wigs.html
With the advent of the 20th century wigs became relegated to enhancing hairstyles or for covering baldness but has never regained the popularity that they enjoyed in previous times as a hair replacement or social status indicator. www.e-wigs.com/history-of-wigs.html
