  • Wigs are heads of hair worn for fashion, cultural and other aesthetic purposes. They are often used to cover baldness. Wigs are made of a number of different materials, including horse-hair, human hair, wool, feathers, buffalo hair, or synthetic. Wigs are made to resemble a normal head of hair or can be made in a bright color for fashion or a costume. Clowns are commonly known for wearing bright-colored wigs in a number of funny hair styles. During the 18th century wig powder was popular, giving the wigs a white or off-white look. Powdering wigs was messy and time-consuming, the fad ended before the 19th century.
