  • Widespread Panic is a jam rock band led by singer John Bell. They are often compared to bands such as Phish and The Grateful Dead because of their free-form live jams and fiercely dedicated fan base. Though they've never broken into regular mainstream radio or TV exposure, they have become an extremely popular touring band, selling out arenas around the country.
  • History

The band formed in the early '80s in Athens, Georgia. After an indie release of their first record, they signed to Capricorn Records and began releasing albums and touring relentlessly. By the late '90s they were regularly drawing tens of thousands of fans to their shows.

In 2002, guitarist and founding member Michael Houser died of pancreatic cancer. He wanted the band to continue without him, and he was replaced by George McConnell and later by Jimmy Herring.
