Why Do We Celebrate Easter

Categories: Holidays | Easter
  • Easter is the oldest Christian holiday and considered by many to be the most important. Easter marks the end of Lent, the death of Jesus of Nazareth on Good Friday and his resurrection from the dead three days later on Easter Sunday. The word "Easter" was derived from the name Eostre, the pagan goddess of fertility and birth. Christians adapted that name as a symbol to tie in the celebration of Christ's resurrection being a new birth.
  • Fast Facts:

    1. Easter takes place after the Jewish holiday of Passover, which according to the New Testament in The Bible was when Christ was crucified and shortly after rose from the dead
    2. The word Paschal, used to describe many things associated with Easter itself derives from Pascha, the Greek/Latin transliteration of Pesach, the Hebrew word for Passover
