Why Did I Get Married?, by popular writer/director Tyler Perry, was largely regarded as "critic-proof" by the media. Perry's loyal following had sent his three previous films, Madea's Family Reunion, Daddy's Little Girls and Diary of a Mad Black Woman to box office success. Critics' reactions to Why Did I Get Married? were on the whole ambivalent; some argued that the film was too melodramatic while others gave it kudos for its emotional depth. The film hit number one at the box office, and receipts significantly exceeded those of Daddy's Little Girls, though they fell slightly short of Medea's Family Reunion.

Why Did I Get Married? Reviews (Good)
- Variety: Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?
- ""Why Did I Get Married?," more smoothly incorporates humor within a soapy self-help framework, as four couples meet in the snowbound wilds of Colorado for an annual marriage checkup. Though fans might miss Perry's genre-exploding daring, the excellent cast injects enough pathos and zing to keep pic percolating..."
- New York Daily News: Why Did I Get Married? Has Couple Trouble (3/4)
- "Director Perry can't keep away from characters big and bold. And his latest mashup of laughs, tears and scandal is made to order for the powerful female cast."
- TV Guide: Why Did I Get Married? Review (2.5/4)
- "Urban theater impresario turned hugely successful independent filmmaker Tyler Perry leaves his Madea drag deep in his closet for a more straightforward comedic melodrama. And oh yes, there will be drama."
- News Blaze: Why Did I Get Married? Review (4/4)
- ""Can these marriages be saved?" is the recurring theme raised by Why Did I Get Married, an alternately enlightening and entertaining adaptation by Tyler Perry of his stage play of the same name."
Why Did I Get Married? Reviews (Bad)
- Naperville Sun: Why Did I Get Married? Review (1.5/4)
- "Kernels of wisdom are shared throughout, most often by Perry, who plays a noble pediatrician tragically underappreciated by his workaholic wife. There's nothing wrong with any of it, really, unless you like your narratives to have a modicum of subtlety."
- Newsday.com: Why Did I Get Married? Review
- "You don't have to be black to enjoy the film, but you do need a strong desire to watch people work out their issues using pop-psychology and self-help techniques."
- Eric D. Snyder: Why Did I Get Married? Review (Grade: D)
- ""Why Did I Get Married?" is a simple, feeble-minded film with a high-school-level screenplay. Where good writers subtly introduce us to the facts about their characters, Tyler Perry just has them flat-out announce things with phony expository dialogue"
- The Austin Chronicle: Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? Review (1/4)
- "As the couples vacation together, emotions run amok, dirt gets thrown, and purportedly, we all learn a little bit more about the true meaning of marriage. But frankly, I think I learned more about the true meaning of contrived melodrama. "
- The A.V. Club: Why Did I Get Married? Review
- "Perry belongs firmly in the "tell, don't show" school of kitchen-sink melodrama. Married groans with artless exposition early on that pays off in a pair of crowd-pleasing acts of marital violence. The film delves into so many loaded issues, from body image to gender roles, that it's almost easier to list the hot-button topics it doesn't explore."
