Although Harry Crumb (John Candy) comes from a long line of private detectives, he does not appear to have inherited the family's knack for detective work. When a baron's daughter is kidnapped and held for ransom, Harry takes the case and give it his all without realizing that he is expected to fail all along. Harry's scheming boss, who is behind the kidnapping, intentionally assigns Harry to the case because of his perceived ineptitude. There are a number of comical disguises and cameo appearances throughout the movie. There are also numerous quotes from the movie which have been popularized such as "Believe what you want, lady.
