A whoopie cushion is a balloon-like device that produces a noise resembling human flatulence when squeezed. Recent iterations of the device have included digital and self-inflating versions.
History
The JEM Rubber Company of Toronto, Canada designed a rubber bladder with a long, narrow opening that, when the bladder was full of air and pressed, gave the distinctive sound of flatulence. The first company they offered the whoopie cushion to rejected it, saying the noise was "indelicate". It has become a perennial practical joke, although it was many years before any catalog was willing to state in no uncertain terms what the distinctive sound was.
