White Castle Background and History
The first White Castle restaurant opened in 1921 when company founder Billy Ingram used $700 to begin selling hamburgers from a shack in Wichita, Kansas. The next year, a second White Castle location was opened in El Dorado, Kansas and, by 1923, the restaurant had expanded to Nebraska.
As the American economy went through major changes, White Castle was able to remain in business by making adjustments. During food rationing in 1943, the company began selling hot dogs and eggs to make up for the lack of available meat. Frozen White Castle burgers were made available in 1950. By 1961, the restaurant had already served one billion hamburgers nationwide. The company remains family owned and operated to this day. http://www.whitecastle.com/company/timeline
