On the evening of February 10, 2009, "Stump"—a ten year old Sussex Spaniel, was named "best in show" at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Stump's handler, Scott Sommer, says he decided one week before the competition to bring the dog out of retirement. Stump had not competed since suffering a "serious illness" in 2004. Of the illness, Sommer said "He got very sick, His body just quit... here he is now winning the Westminister Show and I'm just like thrilled."ABC News: 10-Year-Old Spaniel Wins Westminster (February 11, 2009)

  • PETA Protests

In 2009, PETA (Ethical Treatment of Animals) protested the 133rd annual Westminster dog show. Positioning themselves outside of the show at Madison Square Garden, PETA members decked themselves out in full Ku Klux Klan attire, claiming, "like the Klan, dog breeders who subscribe to the AKC standards are all about the sanctity of 'pure bloodlines.'"LA Times: PETA Protests Dog Show (February 9, 2009)

"Most passers-by seemed more puzzled than offended, though those who didn't stop walked away thinking they really had seen the KKK. The most common reaction was to pull out a cell phone and start snapping photos. Police monitored the situation from nearby, but the scene was mostly calm. One shouting match broke out during the hour-long protest. Earlier, a man strode away yelling, That's disgusting! I'm going to buy more fur!"—Los Angeles TimesLA Times: PETA Protests Dog Show (February 9, 2009)
