West Virginia State University is located in Charleston, West Virginia, between the Appalachian foothills and the Kanawha River. The school's sports teams are part of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.

University History
The school was originally founded in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute. Initially only offering high school education, vocational training and teacher preparation, it began offering college degrees in 1915. The school was renamed West Virginia State College in 1929, then assumed its current name of West Virginia State University in 2004. -
