West Side Story is a musical film that was released in October of 1961. It was first opened as a musical on Broadway in 1957, having been loosely adapted from William Shapespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It is the story of two young lovers, Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer) who relationship is complicated by their association with rival New York gangs. Plot Synopsis
West Side Story, clearly a Romeo and Juliet themed modern day musical is set in New York. Instead of rival families, rival gangs attempt to divide two young lovers, Maria (Natalie Wood) whose brother Bernardo (George Chakiris) is the leader of the Sharks (Puerto Rican) and the boy she has fallen in love with Tony (Richard Beymer) a former gang member of the rival Jets.Cast
