West Bank Barrier

  • The West Bank Barrier is a wall that roughly follows the 1949 armistice line between Israel and Jordan. The wall, currently being built by Israel, will be 436 miles long and is intended to create a security barrier between Israel and Palestine. Recent reports estimate that the wall will be completed in 2010. The construction of the West Bank Barrier is highly controversial. Proponents argue that it is a necessary step to protect Israel from terrorist attacks that have increased during the Second Intifada. Opponents point out that the wall may violate international law and that it establishes a territorial line that has not been conclusively determined in peace talks. Many Jewish Settlers also oppose the wall, arguing that it cuts them off from Israel and will lead to massive displacements. Still others argue that the wall has a significant environmental impact as it will cut off animals from food and water sources. At present, construction and protests continue. Fast Facts:
