Wesley Snipes is an American film actor and star of the Blade film series. Snipes is also a well-known martial artist and is a fourth-degree Black Belt in Karate. In 2006, Snipes was arrested for tax crimes and went to trial. He was convicted of willfully failing to file tax returns for the years 1999-2001 when he owed the government $2.7 million. On April 24, 2008, Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison for tax offenses. Snipes' lawyers argued that he should not receive a prison sentence because he was not a violent criminal and was no threat to society. Prosecutors sought the maximum three year prison term because the trial provided a "singular opportunity" deter tax fraud.
