Trying to come out from under the shadow of the iPad, has meant the WePad has been walking a hard up hill climb.
As of May 7th 2010, the name was changed from WePad to WeTab. This, according to the press release is an attempt to clearly set their product apart from others on the market. Along with this announcement, the company disclosed it will now trade under the WeTab GmbH. The change is only to the name and therefore will not affect any pending pre-orders.

On March 20, 2010 Neofonie introduced the world to the latest in German engineering. Although no price or release date has been given yet the WePad, which is the next generation of tablet computers has made its mark on the tech world. If it delivers on its promise, the WePad might just knock the iPad for a loop.
Neofonie is a German company that creates customized search solutions for highly scalable portals and prestigious customers the world over. Neofonie began in 1998 when they were called Infonie. Formed by 3 employees of a research group of the Technical University of Berlin. They created the first German search engine, called Fireball. Fireball was very successful and led to the creation of the company. In 2002 the company was rename Neofonie. Helmut Hoffer von Ankershoffen is the CEO of Neofonie.
Serving such clients as AOL.de, the BMW Group, O2 and German Bundesbank (Federal Bank of Canada), Neofonie's success is on the rise. The WePad, due to be released in Germany this April, promises to deliver sound breaking internet speeds, easy to access books and periodicals via its WeMagazine ePublishing Eco System, and a variety of ready-to-use applications. All packaged in a stylish, tablet-computer. The device runs a Android OS, meaning access to the Android Market and open e-book Standards.
The Android OS is very compelling to developers which is a win for Neofonie. Because of its Android power, the WePad tablet will open up access to many new and upcoming markets.
The hope is that the WePad will attract the older users of the buying market. Targeting the digital magazine and newspaper element of the media, Neofonie has its eye on the elderly consumer. The WePad is a bit larger than the iPad and has a superior screen resolution.
Neofonie’s goal is to offer an alternative to the iPad. Competitively, the WePad will be priced lower and will feature Flash and Adobe Air. This is the platform many magazine publishers use for their digital version.
