The history of weight training dates back to Greece and the Olympic games. Weight lifting was a sport in the Olympic games, as well a strength test for soldiers in armies around the world. Sir Thomas Elyot developed a book on weight training and exercise in 1531. By 1544, colleges in Germany and France added weight training to their curriculum by offering classes. The Nautilus machine, created by Arthur Jones, was invented in the 1970's. Jones came up with exercise recommendation that included a 20-minute workout three times a week, which is still being followed. The plate-loaded machine was developed in the 1980's, where entire muscle groups were the focus.
