Founded 1916 by John & Walter Wegman, as The Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company, the 70 store Wegmans Food Markets chain is headquartered in Rochester, New York with stores also located in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Wegmans Food Markets has a history of innovation in the grocery industry, being credited with first introducing vaporized water sprays to keep produce fresh and being one of the first grocery chains to adopt laser scanning to read UPC Codes.

The average Wegmans Food Market stocks approximately 60,000 different items; the grocery industry average is approximately 30,000. Wegmans offers its own brand of products including "Food You Feel Good About", a brand first marketed in 1992. At a typical Wegmans a shopper will find in-store cafes, gourmet cheese and pastry shops in addition to the normal grocery store departments and inventory. Gourmet cooking classes and wine tastings are also offered the members of the community.
