Waziristan Conflict

  • The Waziristan Conflict is a war between the army of Pakistan, supported by the United States, and the Waziri tribes, which are allied with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The conflict began in 2004 as a result Pakistan's search for Al Qaeda members in the mountainous Waziristan region as part of the War on Terror. Militant tribes who had ruled the area under a de facto autonomy interpreted the searches as a violation of their territorial claim and responded with force. Though a truce was signed in 2006, tensions escalated to violence again in July of 2007. The United States has taken a role in the conflict by offering occasional military support and financial support, upwards of $4 billion, to Pakistan to fund its operations in Waziristan. The Bush administration has also given Pakistan $3 billion for giving support to the War on Terror.
