In 1958, a booking agent auditioned Wayne Newton and his brother Jerry for a Las Vegas engagement after seeing them perform on a local television show. After a 1962 appearance on The Jackie Gleason Show, Newton was hired as the opening act for comedian Jack Benny. This led to a long career as an entertainer, actor, and recording artist. He has performed over 30,000 times in Las Vegas in the last 40 years.
