Waterworld is an American science fiction adventure film from Universal Pictures wherein the polar ice caps have melted and people live on boats and search for dry land, which most believe to be a myth.

Waterworld had the distinction of being the most expensive movie ever made at the time of its production -- $175 million. Because it was a genre film in the era before most summer blockbusters were science fiction or comic book properties, the industry presumption was that it would fail. While Waterworld only grossed $88 million in U.S. theaters, it brought in more than $260 million dollars once foreign and video markets were counted.
