A Belated Success
Waterworld had the distinction of being the most expensive movie ever made at the time of its production -- $175 million. Because it was a genre film in the era before most summer blockbusters were science fiction or comic book properties, the industry presumption was that it would fail. While Waterworld only grossed $88 million in U.S. theaters, it brought in more than $260 million dollars once foreign and video markets were counted. -
