    On June 17, 2009, a research team from the University of Colorado at Boulder announced they have "the first definitive evidence of shorelines on Mars".Space: Evidence Found for Ancient Mars Lake (June 17, 2009)

    Although the scientists could see signs of "a deep, ancient lake", which suggests the planet may have been able to support life forms in the past, no definitive evidence of current or previous life on Mars has been discovered.

  • Mars Phoenix Lander

    A soil sample containing frozen water was recovered by the Mars Phoenix Lander in June 2008. The Phoenix had been conducting analysis of Martian soil since landing on the planet May 25, 2008. According to NASA, the mission of the Phoenix Lander was to find water on the planet. With this discovery, the mission has been extended for another month.
